Overview

The American Associate of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) offers a vast library of online education courses for their members. Their flagship product, Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO), is a comprehensive primer for everything a new nurse can encounter on the hospital floor. Time and technology were remaking the market, and ECCO needed an update to reemerge as a premiere education experience.

Execution

In addition to a severe visual overhaul, our team rebuilt the entire user experience. User feedback on the previous version of the course uncovered several opportunities to shift the course to a more user-focused experience. Learners requested more context, so we build sophisticated interactive case studies to teach the material. They wanted more control over the experience, so we designed a non-linear interface, letting them address the case studies when they wanted to. It was also apparent that there was no baseline level of prerequisite knowledge. So we streamlined the critical path, and offered easy access to supplemental information when it was important to the scenario at hand.

Outcome

Since its deployment, ECCO 3.0 earned high praise for its scenario-based presentation. It has gone on to win multiple e-learning awards for its advancement of UX concepts in online education.
